Our story
CQ-H2 is a global collaboration involving domestic and international partners from across the hydrogen supply chain who have come together to develop a global-scale renewable hydrogen project near Gladstone in Central Queensland.
CQ-H2 will act as the catalyst for Australia’s hydrogen future by accelerating the decarbonisation of regional Australia, transitioning the economy away from emissions-intensive activity, anchoring regional economic transition in Central Queensland, and launching a new low carbon export industry.
Consortium
The CQ-H2 consortium comprises Japanese foundation companies Iwatani Corporation (Iwatani) and Marubeni Corporation (Marubeni), Singapore’s Keppel Ltd’s Infrastructure Division (Keppel), and Australian energy company Stanwell Corporation Limited (Stanwell).
Each consortium member possesses relevant experience, knowledge and strategic intent for the successful commercial-scale deployment of renewable hydrogen in Central Queensland.
All consortium members are publicly listed entities, except Stanwell, which is a Queensland Government Owned Corporation.
Australian chemicals manufacturer Incitec Pivot Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding in September 2024 with the intent to join the CQ-H2 consortium in support of renewable ammonia development.
Iwatani Corporation (Iwatani) is a leading Japanese trading company, specialising in energy and gas services for industrial and household users in Japan.
Keppel, Infrastructure Division (Keppel) is a global asset manager and operator with strong expertise in sustainability-related solutions spanning the areas of infrastructure, real estate and connectivity. Headquartered in Singapore, Keppel operates in more than 20 countries worldwide, providing critical infrastructure and services for renewables, clean energy, decarbonisation, sustainable urban renewal and digital connectivity.
Marubeni Corporation (Marubeni) is a global Japanese integrated trading and investment conglomerate with products and services spread across a broad range of sectors, including LNG, power projects and infrastructure, industrial machinery, finance, logistics, real estate development and construction.
Stanwell Corporation Limited (Stanwell) is a Queensland Government-owned Corporation and major provider of electricity to Queensland, the National Electricity Market (NEM), and large energy customers along the eastern seaboard of Australia.
Funders
In addition to consortium funding, CQ-H2 has also received financial support from the Australian Government’s Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the Queensland Government’s Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund.
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) was established by the Australian Government on 1 July 2012. ARENA supports the global transition to net zero emissions by accelerating the pace of pre-commercial innovation, to the benefit of Australian consumers, businesses and workers.
The $4.5 billion Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund (QREHJF) allows energy government-owned corporations to increase ownership of commercial renewable energy and hydrogen projects, as well as supporting infrastructure, including in partnership with the private sector.
Capabilities and interests
The CQ-H2 consortium members have a unique mix of competitive advantages to harness the potential of the project.
